I think you may get a lot of response to this one John:
Anyway:
Some significant and perhaps insignificant differences in your setup:
CMM? Are you referring to the 'engine' used by PS5 or ColorSync CMM
setting? I assume you mean PS5. If this is the case it is not the
same as specifying the Heidelberg engine you are using in PS6. Use
the same engine both ways and look for variations. One of my
workflows incorporates the Heidelbery CMM from ColorSync through to
all engines.
Also, most of my image conversions (ex. sRGB) take place under my
standard workflow using the Adobe (ACE) CMM engine in PS6.
Built-In CMYK SWOP in PS5 is arguably different than any
sheetfed. Dot gains vary as much as . A more adequate comparison
would be to use the same profile or at least their characteristics.
Once all your settings are on an even playing field I'd look to the
"custom sheetfed profiled from press."
Incidentally, what makes the two images different - the ouput, the
display, or the measured color values? I ask because my PS5 has more
saturation in the preview than PS6, but PS6 is a more accurate
preview of what my images truly are for both proof prints and press.

about to upgrade prepress department to PS6 and have just had a conversion
done in PS5n that looks better than it does in PS6.
the settings in PS5 are
RGB-adobe 1998 CMYK-built in
GAMMA-2.20 ink colors- swop coated
WTPT-6500 DotGAIN-20%
Primarys-adobe1998 GCR medium blk gen
CMM-automatic Blk MAX-95
total ink-320
uca 5
PS6 SETTINGS
working spaces
RGB-adobe 1998
CMYK custom sheetfed profiled from press
320 total ink, 95 black max medium gen
CMM-Heildelberg
moniter profiled + calibrated
6500 WTPT 2.2 Gamma
Rgb image was supplied by customer with embedded profile
sRGB, computer generated file mostly blue bkgd ,with oval design
all soft vignettes light to dark.
PS5 image was more saturated in color , looked much better to RGB ,file in
PS6
looked better after tweaking a bit.
tried opening in different RGBcolor spaces, using different rendering
intents
still PS5 looked better,i thought PS6 was the way to go,its hard to tell
everyone
that PS6 is better but PS5 conversions looked better on this particular
image. so can anyone enlighten me on why this image looked better in 5

Photoshop 5 and 6 should open your sRGB image identically , so you appear to
have a problem before even converting; are you sure that both are setup to
check for tags?. Are you using a hardware generated monitor profile in both?
Is "display using monitor compensation" turned on in PS5? Unless the two
version of the RGB file appear the same, and show the same numbers, in both
versions, then you can hardly discuss seperations. When you do get to
seperations, why are you using SWOP in one, and Cut Sheet Coated in the
other? Compare apples to apples, if you are going to compare. Both will
convert with the custom press profile, and both will convert with a SWOP or
CutSheetCoated standards based profile.
