I then used Sherlock to find all profiles with this name and there was only
one with todays date.
so i tried it again and deleted prefs and profiles and then received same
result.
hack
so it looks like saving colorsettings has a memory for profiles?
my profiles are named exactly the same,so if it was still there wouldnt it
overwrite the old one?

What you probably had left over were CS000000.tmp files, Colorsync
cache files which retain profiles, profile data respective to profile
location, and CS configuration resource data files the OS stores in
its Temporary Items Folder. You can see how many there are by putting
an alias of your hard drive in the SystemFolder\Apple Menu
ItemsFolder and then use Contextual menus to view the
TemporaryItemsFolder. This is also where you will see all the temp
files created by Pagemaker (if you delete those you may have to
reinstall PM), PhotoShop, etc. I've never had trouble deleting the PS
ones...just the PMs.
Some utilities, like ColorThink, will clean the cache out for you.
You can also do a find on the cs.tmp, locate and delete rather safely
because Colorsync just rebuilds the location data next time it
requires it.
