Yes, this is absolutely essential. If your proofer prints green/yellow and
with too much ink, as is usually the case with unlinearized inkets, it is
almost impossible, if not impossible (although I don't like to use this word
frequently) to print correctly soft, pinkish tones, for example. Also, in
order to compensate for the "too strong of a print effect" of the proofer in
reference to the final print, especially evident with Epson in my
experience, a good linearization is absolutely necessary.
