But if you simply sit down and ask yourself, 'What can I do with
Linocolor 6, Photoshop 6, InDesign 1.5, Illustrator 9 and QuarkXPress
4.11?', and you aren't going to do profile manipulation (and keep in
mind that the manipulation is not for your in-house proofer profile,
but for the PRESS profile you are matching to as the simulation
profile is the one you have to manipulate), then the answer has to be
that QuarkXPress 4.11 is broken as is Illustrator 9.
Fascinating. Our art department has now made a full retreat from AI 9
and they threw it over to me to figure out. The only conclusion I
have come to (first go round) is that: you can generate PDF's which
share the same onscreen characteristics and same output proof
characteristics but so far not the color characteristics demanded by
press re: our Panther RIP. Any mixed CMYK/RGB/softproof goes out the
window. I was looking at the RIP (new upgrade) and much of what you
have written lately on AI made me look again...
But the two
imaging applications are OK and can be synced, despite the three way
complexity of PS6 softproofing. InDesign only supports relative
colorimetric with black point compensation, and for serious proofing
those shadows look a tad too pretty, but still it's OK.
Pretty is good too. I'm was really starting to enjoy InDesign till
they dropped this AI9 thing on me.
So we're
heading in the right direction, and if we chuck QuarkXPress it almost
works now. With a heave and a shove, it'll be OK in half a year or a
year.
But that's like throwing out the hammer in favor of a nailgun. There
are still some uses for a hammer. And you're right, the nailgun needs
a little more amperage.
