Bruce Fraser's "Real World Photoshop" will provide you with a wealth of
invaluable information. Also...you may want to check out this site:

Anything by Andrew Rodney with be "right on".
<<I've used ColorSync to calibrate my monitor (Mac G3, La Cie 19 inch
III, PS 7, Nikon 4000 ED scanner).>>
Certainly, CS to calibrate is better than no calibration, however, there are
some reasonably priced monitor calibration software & hardware packages on
the market that will truly serve you better. Look at:

<<When opening a file I've scanned PS asks about the color space. I've
been changing it from the Nikon 4000 to the La Cie ColorSync ICC
profile. Is this correct? Where does Adobe RGB (1998) come into play?>>
You do not want to convert to your montor profile, you want to convert to a
working space such as Adobe RGB (1998) and then when you save the file from
PS it should be tagged with that space.
With the Nikon 4000, if you are scanning negatives, it might be best to turn
on Nikon's color management and set the working space in it to Adobe RGB
(1998), and unless you have a custom transparancy profile for your scanner...p
robably the best bet is to do the same with transparancies. Then, once
opened in PS, there should be no conversion.
This should be a good starting point...but, learn all you can from "Real
World PS" and other reliable sources so that you can determine modifications
needed to suit your workflow.
