I've got to revisit, as they say, my pile of test prints. I didn't
notice loss of highlight detail, maybe because I was so wrapped up in the
posterized shadows.
But if I'm understanding you correctly, which I doubt at this point, the
pre-lin step basically analyzes the linearity of the printer (it
obviously can't do anything about it), and then redistributes the set
number of sample points to get a better read on the problem areas, which,
by default, stretches them thin elsewhere. I am guessing, then, that an
area of greater non linearity would be a sharper curve on the tonal
slope, or, as they say, becomes the squeaky wheel that gets the grease.
I remember a thread on the list, a good while ago, where "more samples =
accurate profile" was being kicked to & fro, with anything but a
consensus on that it was true. But it would seem in this case that it
must help - yes?
...and what are the better pre-lin/profile packages that handle this type
of situation well?
And another thing comes to mind.... Why couldn't the pre-lin step in a
print-profiling package actually adjust the hardware rather than
re-noodling the curves? We do it with our monitors with
hardware-software such as PreCal. Wouldn't this be the cat's-ass feature
that a vendor would want to add to their higher-end printers?
