Um, yes high end RIPs (like the Colorbus Cyclone) separate linearisation
(aka calibration) from profiling (aka characterization). Using
an appropriate sceening algorithm they linearise the device space
in 12 bit precision, to a density linearised 8 bit "characterization"
space. Gives scope for accurately correcting dot gain at high resolutions,
and allowing every step in 8 bit space to have some meaning.
Although this is all done in software, the RIP controls
the bits on the page, so it is equivalent to "adjusting the hardware".
