I'm trying to visualize this and figure out how it impacts the
profile-maker that makes the profile that changes the values that convert
the image that's sent to the printer that Jack built.
Clipped and compressed are two different affects. Do you know what's
really happening to those PDI shadows? My mind sees compressed as
looking like the classic film s-curve, and clipped like a pilot who
augers-in short of the runway.
So here we have a NCA profile made for an Epson that takes a well-toned
image and posterizes the deep shadows, although NOT when printing the PDI
target.
Hhmmmm... Would it be, then, that the NCA-made profile might have
somewhat of a reverse s-curve (like the slope standing on its tip-toes),
that is neutralized by the flat tonal curve (s-curve) of the PDI image?
I guess the pilot scenario might have a similar affect as well.
OR.... As others have suggested, is the Epson just flooding the shadows
due to the print resolution and media settings. But those settings
printed the profile target, right?
The quest for the Holy Epson Profile is a confusing journey.
