I don't know if this has any bearing on this discussion, but I can't
get Monaco Proof 3.6 to recognize my purple dongle in Jaguar. In
response to a query, I received this email from Monaco Tech Support:
The issue is that Apple is not going to support the support the
Purple USB dongle on OSX. You will need to exchange the Purple for
a Green USB. There is a cost associated with this exchange, and
that is $200.00. If you have any questions or want to exchange your
dongle please refer any questions to the sales dept.
Sweet, huh? And people wonder why I'm not rushing out to switch.
Let me see if I understand this:
A registered, licensed, user of a piece of software is productively
using his software and the dongle which (theoretically) acts as its
copy-protection. After an upgrade to the user's computer operating
system the dongle ceases to operate "correctly" because the
hardware/software hack on which it is based is no longer applicable
to the new system software. As a result the user's legitimately
purchased software is no longer functional.
The user complains and is told that the company has found a new way
to "protect" its software, but that it requires a different dongle
than the one the customer owns. For the pleasure of continuing to use
the software he owns, and has been using as a necessary part of his
business, he must send back his old dongle and purchase a new one for
$200.00.
Excellent! A solution! ... At a price also known as: Over 14.25% of
the cost of a new copy of the (arguably over-priced) software in
question, 40% of the cost of the entire Microsoft Office Suite (at
full retail and dongle-free), and over 134% of the cost of Microsoft
Office during the recent special-promotion sale for new Mac purchases.
All of this over an unnecessary piece of hardware, with (at most)
$10.00 worth of parts in it, which could be easily re-flashed and
returned to the customer for ten minutes of the company's time and
the cost of a stamp. (Unless it is so badly designed that it cannot
be adequately re-flashed...)
If this is really true then the company needs to go out of business,
accompanied by the sound of pounding feet and the shrieks of
potential customers as they run away.
