Don,
I'm very happy to see that you've observed that. In my period at Kodak I
was often in debate with the color scientists that in the real world of
color scanning we often used a different gradation to scan 35mm
transparncies as compared to 4 x 5's.
The science boys would insist that this was not true because they were
the same exact emulsion.
I would argue that while that may be true, my many years of color
scanning and getting sign offs on proofs indicated otherwise.
My own perception was that we view them differently. The way we tend to
hold and look at a slide as compared to a large film transparency
altered our perception of the image and the contrast.
