Colorvision Spyder & Apple 21" CRT Under Mac OSX

Hi.

New to the list, this is a great resource, thanks for being here!

I just got a Colorvision Spyder (first attempt at color management), w/ OptiCal, and downloaded the recent 3.7 update, which makes this app native on OSX. I had previously installed/calibrated under OS 9.2.1 on a separate partition. When I did that, I used PreCal first, then OptiCal; and that went without any real problems....however the OSX verison of OptiCal doesn't seem to recognize the PreCal settings as the OS 9.2.1 version did. It forces you to set the white balance, contrast/brightness again in OptiCal after doing so in PreCal. I don't know if this is a problem or not.

The documentation is pretty incomplete, and in addition to this issue I am in the dark about two things:

1) I am calibrating a 21" Apple Studio CRT monitor (bought with a G4/500, close to 3 years ago) and it has some internal color management of its own. I am not sure whether there is any potential conflict there or what. There are 2 different ways to calibrate this monitor in OSX 10.1.5.1 now (whereas in 9x there was one) ; 1) running a program similiar to Adobe Gamma that seems to be universal to all Apple monitors (which lets me set the indivual RGB channels separately) and 2) Running an internal color calibration scheme similiar to what OptiCal does minus the colorimeter. This is initialized by simply pressing "calibrate" in the Monitors panel (which also lets you set Gamma, and a custom white point I believe). The latter is the only option in 9x.

Which of these should I use for OptiCal/PreCal? Should I use PreCal 1st?

2) I don't know what is the best color temp to use. OptiCal defaults at 6500k, my monitor's naive is 9300k I believe, and I have read 5000k is very common.

I am almost exclusively working in RGB and Greyscale, source images 80% film (mostly b/w LF & MF, some color), 10% flatbed scanning, 10% Nikon Coolpix 5000.
My intention is to output to LightJet and am going to get a Epson 2200 in the near future. These two outputs will be priority and I would like to characterize the 2200 (and my flatbed scanner).

I do work on some files for my job (Windows 2000 environment), prepping for output to a HP DesignJet 2500CP LF inkjet, screen printing (which is subcontracted) and a Gerber Edge (spot/4-color process heat transfer digital printer). To be honest, the standards here are low (although given enough time, I would characterize these printers too).

There is so much to learn and I am realizing that I really need to understand color management, so if you all have some literature recommendations, I'd appreciate it.

-Joe
