RGB to CMYK Conversion - Relative or Absolute
Do the rules change from place to place, person to person?
I am in the process of readying a Quark Document that includes over 100 19th
Century paintings to be printed on the Indigo Printer at a local service
bureau.
I have corrected the Adobe RGB files to match to the original works. Now,
the service bureau has asked me to convert everything to CMYK. They gave me
a Colorsync Profile to use for the CMYK space. I was told to make the
conversions using Photoshop 7, but without using "Advanced" which gives the
option of selecting the rendering intent.
If you do not use "Advanced Mode" in color settings, what is the selected
Intent - a default?
I tried converting to CMYK using the absolute setting, using their CMYK
space. Some of the paintings are very difficult to bring back to life after
this conversion. In PS 7, I am looking at Proof Setup. The difference
between relative and Absolute Colorimetric is significant. Relative looks
far closer to the original RGB than Absolute, which brings the highlights to
a blue white and darkens the shadows. So, I began again. using the relative
option. There is little to no change between the RGB and the CMYK file on
the monitor.
Where will the discrepancies appear if I use a different conversion method
than the service bureau? I believe that I would be doing the final
conversion.
Thanks for any advice, conference, reassurance...
