Paul,
If I understand your question, you are asking for a lot. It is a bit like
asking a stranger over the phone to buy you clothes without any of the
important details, but you expect the clothes to fit.
There are ways to get your images to better match your monitor without using
profiles, but the trade off is that you have to take more time and money to
learn how the important target values for each of the output devices. If you
have the time, money and color skills then go for it.
Profiles are used in pairs. If you want to take advantage of using profiles
to get your monitor to have a better match between originals and output,
then you must use a good source profile and a good destination profile to
have a complete color management system. If you do that, (use profiles for
scanning, as your working space and for a printer space) then your
expectations of having your images print similar to what you see on your
monitor will be met.
If you use just one profile or un known profiles then you do not have a
complete or properly color managed system with profiles, there is a high
probably that strategy will not work. Some times known as a snowballs chance
in *!@#.
