In an ICC savvy application, it doesn't really matter. Outside it does. So
Photoshop and other such applications are quite happy with a display at 2.2
gamma. But if you're using a non ICC savvy application, the appearance may
be preferable at 1.8.
So again, why wasn't OSX produced to implement a 2.2 gamma since Apple was
starting with a "clean slate"?
