ICC in OSX compared to OS9

For what it's worth-

Printing with an Epson SP 2200 on a 17-inch iMac from Photoshop 7 targeting canned paper profiles (No Color Adjustment) I got fair fidelity from screen to paper in 10.2. After the upgrade of the OS to 10.3.1, and in 10.3.2, also Photoshop to CS, the color went haywire with a magenta cast. On upgrading the OS, I had attempted to manually purge Gimp-Print (the driver that would not die), and also deleted all bits of, and reinstalled, the latest driver from Epson. Nothing worked.

Among other experiments, over several weeks, I tried numerous display re-calibrations with the Apple Calibrator. I noticed that the 'Native Gamma' value given in the Calibrator, which I had recorded as 2.12 after the initial upgrade to 10.3.0, and which was the same as in Jaguar, was now reported as 2.42, quite a differential (and when the 'Native Gamma' box was checked, the screen darkened considerably). Tried different settings, tried returning to the generic 'iMac' display profile which I thought would equate to the factory setting, but the printing problem remained.

While on the phone a few days ago yammering at some length at a second-tier Apple tech, who hadn't a clue about the gamma (though he found that an iMac there running 10.3.2 had a similar 'Native Gamma' of 2.4x) but suggested removing the entire contents of the Library/Printers folder, which I did, I was fiddling with the ColorSync Utility, and found the 'Reset to Factory' option on a popup menu in Devices-Displays. I clicked. Lo and behold, the next morning I tried to print and the color aberrations were gone (Sallow skin tones sallow, no longer rubicund, etc.) Something in the OS upgrade, Gimp Print and/or Colorsync interference, was the bolloxing agent? Preventing access, or correct conversion, to the ICC profiles?

I relate this in case the circumstances apply to someone else's Apple display, which might need to be returned to factory (if that was the trick) before recalibrating, with whatever equipment.
