The answer is yes. On our proofing products for instance, there
are two "pure" ways of handling spot colors. One is to use Postscript
as the file format, and use a package that leaves the spot colors
as named colors in the postscript. When RIPing, we lookup the
spot color names and then render them as closely as possible
into the proofing devices colorspace (note we're actually using
L*a*b* internally for this, not RGB).
The other alternative is to RIP it yourself to color plates
(ie. workflow via your image setter RIP), and allow our proofer
to recombine the plates. The spot color plates will have their
colors translated as closely as possible into the gamut of the
proofing device.
