Let me clarify. If you're using a recent version of PhotoShop, you can always do your conversion to a custom printer profile inside PhotoShop prior to printing, and then just choose "none" for color correction in the Epson driver options (assuming that choice is still available under OS-X). This used to give similar but not identical results to picking the custom printer profile in the driver under OS-9. It's a way to apply custom profiles even if the driver doesn't recognize them, but it's much more awkward especially for newcomers.

By the way:

1) I don't know why there was a (slight) difference in prints under OS-9 depending on which method you used to apply the custom profiles.

2) Some people on this list said it was better to choose "automatic" or even "photo-enhance" rather than "none" in the Epson driver when using custom profiles, but there was some question about gamut sizes being the same or not using these different options -- I don't know what the final consensus was on this point.

Considering how important Epson printers are to Mac users doing digital photography, I am dismayed by these ongoing issues with OS-X.

I am also dismayed by Epson tech support's lack of familiarity with ColorSync (ie, BAD advice), but that's been going on for as long as I can remember. And Epson is about average in the non-Apple world in this regard. (I'd have called them "3rd parties" but I hate that term because (a) who's the 2nd party? and (b) it sounds too much like "3rd world" and hence seems derogatory.)

Can this be true? Is this a "feature" of the long-awaited Epson OS-X driver? If so, what a giant leap backwards for Epson (and, indirectly, Apple)!

Nope. If there's a way of using custom profiles with the Epson
driver, I've yet to find it, and believe me, I've tried!
