There is a standard and there are tools to work with the standard.
(1) The FOGRA Media Wedge CMYK and corresponding Excel spreadsheet from
http://www.fogra.org. The solution defines media and ink tolerances.
(2) A GretagMacbeth Spectrolino or GretagMacbeth Eye-One
spectrophotometer.
(3) GretagMacbeth KeyWizard (for easy transfer to the FOGRA
spreadsheet) or GretagMacbeth MeasureTool 4.1 for easy capture and
comparison of media strip values.
(4) A color server or RIP with direct support for cross-rendering the
FOGRA Media Wedge CMYK outside the netto page area, e.g. BESTColor or
GretagMacbeth iQueue.
Hope this helps.
