that. Its low cost, offers USB for other uses, and works.
There's a problem I've noticed when trying to install inexpensive PCI
USB cards in beige G3s. For some reason the 'bracket to slot'
distance on these older Macs is longer than what you find in PCs.
When you put the USB card in the pins will often not seat properly
and you'll go nuts trying to get it to work, thinking it's a
compatibility issue or something that needs an OS update, etc..
Well it doesn't work because it's not really plugged in!
The only fix I've found requires bending up the angled end piece of
the bracket (the part you screw down) and adding a new 900 bend
further up (about 1/8 - 1/4"). This allows the card to move deeper
into the PCI slot of the motherboard. I then use a washer and a screw
to hold down the newly bent bracket because the screw hole no longer
lines up. This is necessary or the card will pop out of the slot when
you plug in a USB connector.
Bottom line is that you must insure that a PCI USB card is properly
seated in the PCI slot. Otherwise it will never work.
Hope this helps some folks avoid frustration.
