We'll just need to rename this the andrew colorsync mailing list...

Andrew and Andrew, Thanks for the responses, I really appreciate them. I'm a little disappointed that preview does not utilize the default colorspace that is defined in the preferences.

I think the hardest part of being a newbie at all of this is that all the tools try to be smart so you don't have to be. I'm a software engineer, and I've read enough that I think I understand the concepts behind colorsync. But between the magic, the bugs, and the inconsistancies, I just can't tell who is doing what to my image.

Thanks Again,

-Drew

I took a digital image which had no embedded profile, and was not
tagged with a color profile in the EXIF header. I opened it in
Photoshop, and saved a copy with the Adobe RGB 98 profile.

If I open these two images in photoshop (checking "leave as is - don't
color manage), they look identical. If I open them in preview, they
look different.

Why is this?

Your PS working space is probably Adobe RGB & untagged images are treated as
if they are in your default working space, thus the tagged & untagged
versions look the same in PS. Your Preview application is making a different
assumption regarding the default profile for untagged files, thus the
AdobeRGB-tagged & untagged versions look different.
