embedding colorsync profiles in digital images

  • Subject: embedding colorsync profiles in digital images

Hi Folks,
I apologize in advance if this is a newbie question...

I took a digital image which had no embedded profile, and was not tagged with a color profile in the EXIF header. I opened it in Photoshop, and saved a copy with the Adobe RGB 98 profile.

If I open these two images in photoshop (checking "leave as is - don't color manage), they look identical. If I open them in preview, they look different.

Why is this?
