Henrik,
I have been following this thread since yesterday and I am not sure I
understand totally what you saying. If your are saying that fine art
photographers need to use PDF in their work flow then I have to respectfully
disagree.
You just don9t (usually) need pdf files in a fine art photography workflow.
Most of the time (not just on one or two occasions) a fine art photographer
will print one image at a time (say a tiff file) to his or her printer. Then
they are done with that part of the process.
In that type of workflow there is no need to complicate the printing process
for the photographer by using a PDF file. That is unless that photographer
is being foolish and is trying to use a more complex workflow. And that
could (theoretically) happen because the rip they own is forcing them to do
that.
My observations, much like Bruce Fraser's, is that Photographers who make
fine art prints using one image at a time need a rip with (1) icc based
features and (2) the rip must be easy-to-use.
Out of the 70+ rips in the market there are very few rips that offer those
two criteria. In relation to raster rips, over the past year, at least two
more raster rips have been introduced to the market. This appears to be
twice as many offerings as the year before. Not a large number, but this
indicates that vendors are willing to provide rips to a non-PostScript
market segment.
