Jay,
Your points are well taken, especially the comment " that photographers
and printers need to sit down for a candid dialog of exactly what is
expected of each participant ". These are logical as well as good business
practices.
On a technical note, there are only a few raster rips out there right now.
The ones I know of that run on OSX are ImagePrint as you pointed out, the
ColorBurst Xphoto/Xproof. On the Windows side, there again is ImagePrint and
the Egosoft product offering. If there are more, I would like to know about
them.
Each of these products comes in at different price points, feature sets and
icc profiling capabilities that give end-users a choice of more or less
features based on price. And they all work for photographic workflows.
Of course there are more PostScript based rip products that would offer a
wider range of options and would cost more.
