One of the main problems in this link is the shady business of
proprietary proofing. We got rid of proprietary scanning at the very
start, with the Mac Color Transformation Unit (MacCTU for NuBus),
ColorSync, LinoColor, Live Picture and whatnot.
Zealots do not generally tend to have the best judgment. In the area of
color management, for most of us, the most important objective is to get
the right color. If at present (and this is what the past proofing
shootouts have shown - aside from my own extensive experience)
proprietary solutions give better matches - proof to print, then I do
not see it as either shady or as something I would want to give up.
If you download the slidepres 2003 Power Point presentation from the ICC
website, you will see on slide 52 under "Challenges for the ICC" - "
Existing central hub model questioned - Not optimal for device to
device." On slide 19, which deals with device link color
transformations (which some proprietary proofing systems use) you will
see under "Device Dependent Color Transformations" - " Primarily used in
high-end proprietary systems. - Dedicated, pair-wise transformation from
source to destination. - Transformations have both source and
destination information (gamut, viewing conditions). - Can be optimised
for a device pair.
So, while you can continue to rant on this list and on others with about
the "non-optimal" ICC proofing system of your choice (it doesn't really
matter which) I will continue to go with the "high-end", "dedicated",
and "optimized" proprietary proofing system to get the same precise,
consistent results it has been producing for quite some time.
