Using OS 10.2.8, I ran a test processing a group of identical images converted to various RGB and CMYK profiles in Photoshop CS as a PDF presentation. My Photoshop preferences are set to embed profiles to saved images.
Opening the resulting PDF in Acrobat 6.0.1 shows that the images look very different from one another, and preflighting in Acrobat 6.0.1 shows the profiles listed for each image as CalRGB, so it would appear that all images are being interpreted with an applied CalRGB profile. (I'm not sure how this relates to the test CMYK image.) The source images, when the CalRGB g1.8 D50 profile is applied in Photoshop looks nearly identical to the results in Acrobat.
I'm not sure where the PDF settings are being applied, but I tried current settings in Distiller 6.0.1 set to leave images unchanged, or to tag all images, or convert all to sRGB and had the default working spaces (in AC6) set to either Adobe RGB, sRGB, or None. Nothing seems to do the trick. In case things are somehow coming from the Adobe PDF print driver (the one that appears in Print Center), the last settings in that should have passed tagged data as well.
Then, even more confusingly, if I reopen any particular page from the PDF in Photoshop, the first profile listed in the pop-up menu of color spaces, in each case, is the original, correct profile for each image -- but the image opens in Photoshop looking very wrong, and the same as it looked in the PDF.
Can someone clarify what's happening here, and how I might successfully be able to create a PDF presentation that is properly color managed. Or will I need to convert each image to CalRGB to get this to work.
Or then again, can someone recommend a program that will create and display color-managed slideshows. We're doing a promotional presentation for a just-released book that will be built from a large number of currently CMYK images from the book, so I need to get a strategy in place to hand this off to the guy who will be doing the presentations, who doesn't want to deal with any technicalities himself.
Thanks.
