nuts and bolts question about Colorsync startup on an OS X box

  • Subject: nuts and bolts question about Colorsync startup on an OS X box

I'm troubleshooting a friends G4 with the latest OS 10.3.6(? could be 10.3.7). After startup and before the desktop is fully presented but the background image is visible, a profile loads. Unfortunately, it's a bad profile, the contrast immediately is boosted and colors overly saturated. Seems like this should be an easy problem, just change the profile..... nope. Using Colorsync Utility changing the profile doesn't seem to make a difference. It's as though the Colorsync Utility is just not working, clicking through the list of profiles the screen remains the same. I've restarted with all of the profile folders from the the user folder and main library folder removed, but without any benefit. A restart from a Boot CD doesn't have this problem, so it must be somewhere in the OS. I've; trashed the Colorsync .plist., removed a version of PhotoCal that was on this computer, tried a new video board, tried a new monitor, reset cuda button, tested battery etc. A new install of OptiCal can make a create a new profile but it uses this bad profile as a base, for example the gamma that is displayed is so bad that within the Optical or even the default MacOS Colorsync calibrator there is no way to use the brighten functions of the monitor to bring it to the recommended spec. So this new profile is just trying to fix a bad profile. I know that there must be a simple thing that we've overlooked. But, nothing seems to be working. Since this isn't my computer I'm trying to be a little more cautious about my path, although I'm inclined to go to Sears and purchase a new hammer.

Here are the questions:

In OS X is there anyway other than the Colorsync Utility to see what profile has been loaded?
Are there any other LUTs that may be loading upon startup?
Can Colorsync be temporarily disabled?
Can the Colorsync component of the OS be installed as a separate item or would this entail a complete reinstall of the OS?
Anyway to see the startup process (I've re-started with the console "cmd-v" but this stops before the profile loads)?

I realize that this question is a little more nuts and bolts than most of the more interesting discussions on the list, so I appreciate your patience.

thanks for your help. and happy holidays!

Jeff
