I'm trying to pin down the nature of the Lab numbers in the Information Palette. Using an RGB image, my goal is to compare the "as made" color values taken from the Information Palette with the the Lab values measured (using an EyeOne & i1Share) from a printed color target.

This can be done, right?

I read in "Color Management" Frasier, et al, that setting the "Edit>Color Settings" to Absolute Colorimetric cause the derivative color information, such as Info>Palette Settigs>Lab, in the Information Palette to be direct conversions from the RGB values. I assume the conversion is done through the working space profile (Adobe RGB 1998) to PCS Lab.

Thus, when working with an RGB image, using the Absolute Colorimetric w/BPC settings in Edit>Color Settings, the Lab color information in the Info Palette is a direct conversion of the RGB data in the image, and I can compare those "as made" Lab values to the Lab values that I measure directly from the printed image.

Since you started out with an Adobe RGB image, you would have had to convert it at print time using the printer profile and Absolute Colorimetric rendering for this method to be valid.

OR, you would have to convert the RGB file using the same settings used to print the file, thereby meaning it is no longer an Adobe RGB image but rather is converted to, and is assigned, the printer/media profile you are testing.

Then, if I soft proof the image in View>Proof Setup>Custom, using the printer profile (whatever the rendering intent), will the Lab values in the Info Palette reflect the colors being sent to the printer (Epson 9600; Print with Profile, NCM), corrected by the printer profile (ProfileMaker 4.1.5)?

Info palette LAB values reflect the document assigned profile + the rendering intent setting in Color Settings and are not affected by Proof Setup.
