| There are enough RIPs with n-color support for the
"official"
| n-color printers. It is a pity though that there's no
n-color
| support on any RIP for converted printers like an Epson 9000
with
| Generations CMYKOG pigment inks. There certainly is an
interest in
| conversions like that. If Gimp-print gets its R800 driver it
would
| be nice when there's spin-off in n-color drivers for
"converted"
| printers. The flexibility of Gimp-print is already proven
with the
| Quad Tone Rip for B&W printing. Today I printed the first
test
| sheets on an Epson 9000 from a beta Gimp-print port to Risc
| Os. That's the third OS to have Gimp-print running. And the
| quality of the prints is excellent.
|
| Gimp-Print offers a full raw mode, so as soon as I add support
for all
| 8 channels (even if we don't use them yet), some intrepid
hacker could
| put an 8-channel front end on it. I do have the programming
| information, so this is something I can do.

"so this is something I can do" Does that include the role of
intrepid hacker ? Otherwise I start looking for someone right
away :-) Thank you for the positive news.
BTW, the 8 channel may come in handy if both black channels of
the Epson 4000 can be addressed simultaneously
(firm and hardware allowing it). For any odd inkset I mean but
also using the two blacks + the grey simultaneously in colour
printing could result in smoother greyscales on matte papers and
even gloss papers as the addition of the gloss black to the matte
black on the paper reduces the bronzing effects considerably
(Paul Roark tests described on the Digital Black and White list).
And Black Only printing with two heads (both at 50 %) with a
total of 360 nozzles will improve the quality of that niche in
black and white photography printing. But that isn't depending on
the 8 channel support.
Another BTW: the English Epson R800 driver version doesn't have
Black Only printing but the Japanese version has it. So there's
no reason why it shouldn't work in the Gimp-print driver.
