"Gamma" is a loaded term, let's agree. I was using the broadest sense
of the word, which applies to the overall perceived contrast of an
image. The Anderson et al. (sRGB) paper does an excellent job of
defining gamma, so I won't attempt to here.
All we're saying is that sRGB isn't good enough, and we choose not to
default to it. I'm glad some agree, I'm glad others disagree. The great
thing is, you can recalibrate and profile your display to look like
sRGB. You can also embed an sRGB profile into images, and they'll
display correctly in every application, no matter what the display
gamma is.
