With all due respect, I heartily disagree. One reason is that I have
waited ten years for page design software to appear that actually
worked, after endless workarounds based on QuarkXPress, the Digital Zone
XTension, the Helios XTension, LogoProof, BatchMatcherPS and iQueue.
Another reason is that I will be dead and gone long before the ICC
adopts a gamut mapping technology which is dynamic in the sense
suggested above. And a third reason is that at this point the page
design, the proofing and the printing people are so far behind in
technology and in understanding that perfectionism (and listening to
myself saying that sounds strange -:)) is misplaced.
It really has nothing much to do with whether the ICC adopts such
an approach or not. It is certainly possible to do image specific
gamut mapping using ICC profiles. Such link creation isn't as
fast as the traditional "dumb CMM" approach though. It's
really about proving the value of such an approach, and
then tool vendors offering such an option.
