Any hint?

It would be trivial to do that with XMP.

Couldn't images have some kind of profile URL embedded in the XMP
metadata? The system you describe, Bruce, works OK for you but what
would you think of deploying such a system large scale in a
publishing house? Across the industry? There's got to be a better
way. I realize that CMYK profiles carry an hefty storage tag. And
sprinkling thousands of files with the same profile is inefficient at
best. I"d rather have one cetral profile location and all profile
references disseminatd accross all my images. That way if I need to
update the profile it's easily don -- I wouldn' t have to reopen and
resave thousands of images. It seems to me that what you're doing in
your own private archival system resembles strangley to the very idea
of 'external tagging', effectively keeping a link to the associated
profile while storing the profile outside the file, elsewhere.
Couldn't that mechanism be formelized as a solution? That way, CMYK
images could be exhanged without any profiles embedded, just a link
to the profile that a receiver could decide to honor or reject.
