ON page 113 of "Making Within the Stone.pdf" the following text appears:
> Compare resulting solid ink densities of SWOP standard and Vanfu high density:
> C 1.30 > 2.03
> M 1.40 > 1.85
> Y 1.00 > 1.56
> K 1.70 > 2.24
One can only ask the obvious question: are these measured with StatusT
densitometry? And if it is, it means that the solids were pretty dark. I
once pushed an offset press on coated glossy stock to these kinds of StatusT
density values and all colors became way, way dark and colorless. So, I am
suspicious.
On page 119, a four-colour Heidelberg shetfed press is shown. From my humble
experience in the print world and my understanding of an offset press, I
don't see how good water/ink balance can be attained and maintained at
StatusT densities? I suspect that the densities were measured with a
polarized filter to begin with, explaining their disproportionately high
values relative to typical north america scale. Unfortunately, page 143 does
not show the densitometry type setup :( So it's not possible to tell which
Status density was used by the printer.
Second question: on page 116, it is shown that four randowm ECI2002 target
were used to characterize the press, at the above densities. Nothing unusual
here in this method. I suppose measurements from those four targets were
averaged to yield the final measurements set from which the profile was
built?
On page 137, one can recognize SCID images.
I remain to be convinced about the higher SID densities. Perhaps the best
test remains the D50/2 CIELab values of the four process colors at the said
densities and their three overprints?
For sure, this PDF is one hell of an instructional document for anyone
wanting to learn more about color management and I personally want to thank
Mr. Atkinson for doing it so generously. Thank's Ray and Randy for having
pointed it out. Hope everyone can garner thr bandwidth required to download
and study it.
