I suppose everything exhibits some metameric failure to some degree in that
two dissimilar colorants can only be made to visually match under *only* one
quality of light. Change the light, and things start to happen. I've tested
different brands of RA4 photo papers against a standard and found, not only
do they each perform in their own unique way under different lamps, but
there are differences even within the same brand between different
emulsions!
Given this fact, to choose a proofing system based on its ability to show
metameric effects is not the way to handle the problem. It's better to
choose one based on the other qualities of the proof, and then keep to as
standard a lighting condition as possible. For critical work, everyone in
the approval chain should purchase not only the same brand of lamp, but also
out of the same batch.
