If you don't like the results then perhaps you didn't send them the right CMYK. That still doesn't mean it's necessarily your fault but you and the printer need to talk more to determine which standard printing condition they are closest to. Then you can create the best CMYK for the job and avoid the strange surprises.

This makes sense of course. The real issue here was that the printer
gave me a wrong indication of what color space I should send the files
in. He told me to use Eurostandard and then he uses Photoshop 5 default
CMYK. Following this mishap we will have another discussion and
hopefully find a better compromise!
