Hi Graeme,

I have to print at 1440 dpi with my 7000, but that's because it does not have variable droplet printing, so its the only way I can get solid blacks. With my 1270 printer however, I usually print at 720 dpi. It has no trouble printing solid blacks at 720 dpi. I do not get banding with either printer. The 7000 is most susceptible, but a good print head alignment calibration has eliminated that. The only time I get banding now is when a print head jet is clogged (very rare).

Your 9600 has variable droplet printing, so I dont know any good reason for you to get banding if you dont have a clogged nozzle, or an alignment problem (or perhaps some other mechanical problem).

Hi Steve,

We run our 7600 through GMG at 720dpi and think it is 'good' for proofing purposes. On GMG stock and other gloss / semi matt papers.
I think they look smoother than digital cromalins. But I think the GMG adds a little 'spray' of noise that helps avoid banding.

For the higher end print work, we HAVE to run our other printer (Epson 9600) at 1440dpi to avoid any banding / gaps. (this is running matt black)
But it takes so much longer that it depends on deadlines which one we use. We run this through Proofmaster and print quality is amazingly smooth with little or no banding.

I think it is a choice between time / quality, and it can be a HUGE difference. Recently we had to run some urgent very large prints (1m x 2.5m).
At 1440dpi on the 9600 one took 2.5 hrs. At 720dpi it took 50mins. The difference could be seen when looking closely of course, but time constraints meant
we had to run it at 720dpi.

Interested to here what other people print at.

Graeme

Just curious what resolution others are running their
Epson 10600 and or 9600 printers at. We have been
running our 10600 at 1440 due to banding. The 9600 we
run at 720 and get banding about 30% of the time. We
are running high end color so it has to be critical
color match and we are using GMG stock. I am thinking
of switching that to 1440 as well as we have been
burned by light banding which is hard to see, but has
caused dramatic color shifts in certain tonal ranges.
The big problem is when those proofs make it out to
the pressroom. Just wanted to see if anyone has luck
achieiving high end color results consistantly through
one of these devices at 720.
