Following up on my previous post, let me qualify my statement by noting that
a possible problem with going back to a 16-bit file (in the event that the
8-bit version "breaks") is that, if you have retouched the image in 8 bits
(using a brush, a clone stamp, or any other tool that modifies selected
pixels, not the overall image), those steps will have to be repeated exactly
in 16-bits. This is in case the modified pixels themselves should exhibit
signs of breakdown. Which is not as easy as simply transferring an
adjustment layer from the 8-bit to the 16-bit file, say.
But if those pixels do NOT show signs of breakdown, I guess that they could
be transferred straight to the 16-bit image, IF they live on layers that are
SEPARATE from the main image. Does that sound right?
Thank you.
