Jim,
The biggest problem I see with 8-bit files is hue shifting. Banding is somewhat less common though not what I'd call rare. A lot of the work I deal with goes to output processes that have wider gamuts and longer tone scales than 4/c press. I make heavy use of blending modes and graduated masks. I think we play in very different spaces.
