If you're working in real world device spaces (as opposed to idealized
device spaces), then all bets are off as to whether 8 bits will be sufficient.
8 bits seems to be generally sufficient when color is encode in an
approximately uniform perceptual space. Many devices (particularly printing
devices) have a far from perceptually uniform characteristic.
