Create an RGB document in Illustrator 10, draw some random object,
save out the file as a PDF and have it embed the document profile.
When I open this document, the profile is honored. So clearly there is
a particular structure for the PDF and/or ICC profile that Illustrator
will honor, but not others. I don't know why. It's not good. But it's
a question for Adobe. In the meantime, perhaps you can inspect their
PDF and mimic what they are doing.
I extracted the profiles from both an AI file (for Generic RGB) and a
Cocoa pdf and they are identical. The way the profiles are referenced
is different but as far as a an determine both legal (pdf is a
nightmare format). Based on my experiences trying to write an svg file
that Illustrator would read correctly I'd bet money that the AI reader
is looking for the profile to be referenced one particular way and
ignoring that fact that the spec says it can be referenced other ways.
