color managing Kodak 1400

Recently I purchased a Kodak 1400 dye-sub printer. It took some trouble getting it to run on my Mac, but in the end I succeeded. Image quality is excellent. I made a custom profile and it works quite well.
But last week it suddenly refused to make any more prints on my Mac. I didn't manage to bring the darn thing back to printing again on the Mac. And Kodak wasn't any help either....
So I'm stuck to printing from a PC. Worse: the color management is all messed up.

I set the printer properties to always choose my custom profile as default. Then I converted my image from AdobeRGB to custom printer profile and hit the print button, without adjusting anything, like I've done on the Mac. The result was appaling. Picture way too dark and light colors far off the mark. I waisted quite a few prints to experiment with different settings in the driver. But nothing seemed to have any influence on the resulting colors. And as the printer driver color settings are hardly documented, I'm really in the dark here.
Then I had an idea: instead of converting to custom printer profile, I converted to sRGB. This resulted in nearly identical colors as a Mac print.

I don't get it. Does Kodak force me to convert my pics to sRGB before printing? That would make me quite unhappy...
Am I doing something wrong? Or did Kodak make a crappy driver?
