Thank you, Stan. I guess I had the mistaken impression that, since XYZ
values are used before chromatic adaptation to a color space with a given
white point, they could offer an advantage over CIELAB values, which instead
must assume a given white point and chromatic adaptation.

Hey, what do I know...? Gotta study up some more: maybe then the fog will
lift...
