It affects your ability to read absolute Lab values in non-D50 spaces
such as Adobe RGB and sRGB. It has no effect on D50 spaces like
ProPhoto since there's no difference between relative and absolute
going from a D50 space to D50 Lab.
I complained about the loss of functionality, but I do understand why
they did it. A real fix would be fairly complicated. Hardly anyone
realises that the default RI affects the Info palette and the Color
Picker, and addig new color management UI is not something to be
undertaken lightly....

Bruce,
Thank you for explaining this to me. Does this affect my ability to
read accurate lab values? In fact, it was you that helped me
realise that configuring colour settings to absolute was the only
way to accurately read lab values in Photoshop.
