so we’ve eliminated the daunting task of creating profiles for every printer (and every press therein), by simply profiling the 3 or 4 pre-press companies that we work with. We simply send them the CMYK targets (in our case using Monaco Profiler), have them proofed (both press proofs and digital) and then create profiles (in my case using the XRite DTP70 quite successfully). We only need check with the various pre-press companies, and printers, to find out their standards for “Maximum Black”, “TAC”, etc…and then generate the profiles for gloss art, matte art, and wood free papers. I can tell you from experience that these profiles are more accurate and work better than their own in-house custom profiles, and certainly better than the canned SWOP or other CMYK generic profiles.
By “generic” CMYK profiles are you referring to something like the ECI ISO Coated? Or just the canned generic profile in say Photoshop?
In the past we’ve also gone this approach similar to yours – by profiling the 2-3 pre-press digital proofers (in our case within the actual Asian printers pre-press department, not a outside pre-press company) – mainly because the Asian printers I work with usually have latest high end digital proofers (Creo Spectrums & Kodak Approvals), which is one of my requirements, and which also have a high degree of color management expertise.
What I’m looking into now is the feasibility of aligning my in-house proofing system (and my Asian printers) to an international standard like ISO Coated and then being able to verify both my internal proofs and my Asian printers proofs that they meet this standard.

Visual standards are a nightmare. FOGRA standards allow us to produce a genuine *contract proof*.

I am a commercial printer and run over 250 proofs a week using the ISOCoated profile - I have not used the Fogra Certified proofs as it puts a yellow caste over the sheets and my clients object to it as we print on whiter paper - but we match the ISOCoated proofs all the time - it has revolutionized how we print

By definition (almost) if a proof is made using characterization data
from a real press and the proof is within, say, 1 dE of that data, then it should be capable of being matched on press.
By these statements I am seeming to believe that what I am envisioning must be doable – what with the right equipment / inks / media & software.
Would those on the list who are currently doing this care to share their recommendations and advice on how to achieve this?
