The reality was that I was never able to get a proofer gamut that was any better than what I was getting from a Sherpa43 CMYKcm. I tried various papers and Pantone Vantage inks. I used ProfileMaker with the multicolor plug-in for the hifi profile.

To state the obvious, you did send out GMB separated Hex chart? Your Hexachrome profile should look quite different from a traditional 4/C profile. Obvious excursions in the orange and green.

I did use the MC Hexa charts when profiling the proofer.
When I looked at canned profiles, they were not any better.

So my point is, is it possible to get a good hexachrome profile off
of the Roland HiFi, as compared to a press set up for hexachrome? If
it is the fact that it is not possible, that would relieve me of
being the source of the failure.

I have been doing extensive testing of Hexachrome proofing with a FJ540 here
with all the RIPs under the sun. Though ColorBurst Win can't proof a
separated Hexachrome press file to a Roland Hexachrome printer you should be
able to get excellent proofs of 4/C files with spot colors emitted in
postscript stream to get the Pantone color matches you are seeking. Make
sure those Pantone colors are showing up in the postscript stream.

I am not sure if I understand you here. I was using the Colorburst Prepress RIP, which does allow ink settings for 7th and 8th color. Are you saying that if the RIP received a separated PostScript file with the heading Hexachrome Green, it would not understand how to render this file?

As I recall, the MC Hexa EPS file, when it was sent native to the Colorburst, would error out. I think what I ended up having to do was distilling the EPS to make a composite PDF. Viewing that PDF in Acrobat using the Advanced>Output Preview indicated a makeup of Hexachrome inks. So could it be that the RIP converted all that to CMYK data?

Also, these were experiments I was trying a year ago while employed at a different company. My current employer finds it prudent to curb some of my theoretical explorations.
