My results were FAR from scientific and I think Bruce as usual makes a valid
point. I tested the 918 versus both the 1729 and 4096 patch targets on an
Epson 2400 (Glossy paper). I didn't visually see a huge difference but the
difference was there. As I mentioned, the biggest improvement I saw was in
better shadow detail and a tad better neutrality in a black to white
gradient upon output. This seems similar to tests I did when ProfileMaker 5
was in beta and I had the opportunity to build a custom target with over
10,000 patches. There was an improvement but depending on how much time you
have (and how fast a Spectrophotometer), many would feel it was way past the
point of diminishing returns.
With the 4096 target and an i0, the process is so fast that for a lot of the
work I'm doing, I have no regrets. Of course, 918 patches could be read
really quickly if time were key.
