Recently a lot of posts to the list have contained large sections of
quoted text. Well, that's not really what you want to do. It's
better to quote just a few words, just enough to refer to the
original idea, then go on with your reply. When you quote an entire
post and reply to it, trust me, nobody's going to read the whole
thing so you might as well not put it there in the first place. Most
of the time your reply only applies to one section of the post, so
just quote a few words or maybe a line from that section. If there
are a couple things in a long post you want to reply to, you can
quote small bits of it twice, interspersing your reply with short
quotes of the original.
It's a good idea to familiarize yourself with the rules of
netiquette, meaning good posting practices. Like everything else
there's a wikipedia page about it. This one's short and worth reading.
