There's still a lot of mystique surrounding CMYK separations. But, as much
as we would like to believe that the task is always in the hands of careful
prepress craftsmen of great wisdom and experience, the truth is that more
often than not they are performed by operators whose way of doing it doesn't
go much further than selecting Image > Mode > CMYK in Photoshop (without
even checking *what* CMYK and what RI or Black Compensation settings are in
the defaults). I say this because I have seen it happen.
Truth is also that many photographers these days have the knowledge and
practical expertise to create separations that are at the very least equal
to those from most prepress departments, and oftentimes better, or even
*far* better, if one can manage to nail the aim points by piercing the wall
of obfuscation that is so often raised when one demands to know the output
conditions.
Lastly, let's not forget that CMYK separations are not exactly rocket
science: most of the time, a separation will be further influenced and
"massaged" downstream, during platemaking perhaps, and certainly on the
printing press floor, where the "play" of ink composition and densities,
plate pressure, and endless other factors will push the results this way and
that.
So, long story short, to the question "should the photographer make a
separation", I would certainly answer the same way as Bob: if the
photographer is knowledgeable and is willing and able to take on her/himself
the burden of the ensuing responsibilities for the sake of more exacting
results, then "why not"?
Best regards, and a happy new year to everyone!
