We've made some progress here in the UK when it comes to images
destined for most of our periodical magazines , for both editorial
and advertising images. A group of us working together in the shape
of the Periodical Publishers Association's pass4press and pic4press
initiatives have produced best practice guidelines for magazine
digital workflow. The advantage of these guides is that they were put
together by a varied bunch of individuals including CM software and
hardware manufacturers , proofing software and hardware
manufacturers , printers , pre press , magazine producers and IT
managers ,photographers etc.
The idea of involving such a disparate bunch was to produce
guidelines that were workable for all , and could be referred to by
all when any queries or even disputes arose over as to was
responsible for what , and in which form files should be handed over
throughout the production process from photography to press.
There was a lot of flak with the earlier versions of the brochures /
pdfs produced , especially on the proofing methods chosen , but over
the years there has been a concerted move to move towards ISO
standards for proofing and separation ( the results of will be seen
in the latest versions) and most of the contributors are happy with
the balance that has been reached . The latest versions are soon to
be posted on the pass4press web site.
The preceding versions are still available at :
pass4press : http://www.pass4press.com/cgi-bin/wms.pl/416
pic4press: http://www.pass4press.com/cgi-bin/wms.pl/417
Something more universal ( not just magazines ) worth looking at is
the IQA best best practice document at :
http://www.iqa.org/digital/
And of course the UpDig guidelines , available at:
http://www.iqa.org/digital/
As with all such documents , all and any feedback, on list or off
list , is much appreciated as they are by the nature of the
technology , always 'works in progress '

Bob Marchant.
