"Brightness" is one way to manipulate black level. It
was always a black point tool only black level is too
hard to explain.

Disable Adobe's gamma application if you have it
installed. Get the monitor into a reasonable
blackpoint state with brightness. Then check your
contrast and color levels.

With that done, enable and adjust adobe's gamma
application. Finally, mess around with the "black
level" option and tell us what it does to an image!
