Rodger

Sorry to burst the bubble on your hopes for a "negative light" control, but we have not quite perfected that one yet ;-) The black level controls can only be used to add light to the LCD output.

The minimum black luminance, and hence maximum contrast ratio, is determined by the physics of the LCD panel.

The black level controls add an offset to the internal LUTs of the display, thus increasing the luminance of blacks, and in turn reducing the contrast ratio. It can be useful if you want to do things like simulate low contrast output such as newsprint, or want to manually adjust the "white" point of black using the individual R, G and B black level controls, like you would using the bias controls on a CRT.

Beats me as to how they can adjust (presumably up or down) the black levels
on an LCD. The way I understand LCD technology, assuming CCFL, all lights
emanates from a back light which is modulated by twisted nematics crystals,
which works as shutters. In a fully "twisted" or rotated state, the crystal
form an effective barrier to light coming from the CCFL. I don't see how NEC
could have devised a separate control for further blocking all light from
the CCFL but, if they succeeded in doing so, it will be interesting to see
how low they managed to drive it down, in quantitative terms -- less and
0,30 cd/m2?
